ABOUT THE PORTAL

According to the UP Solar Policy 2022, there is a strong emphasis on establishing solar cities. These solar cities are aimed at achieving a minimum 10% reduction in projected total demand for conventional energy within five years. This reduction will be achieved through the installation of renewable energy systems and the implementation of energy-efficient measures. The initiative begins with the development of Ayodhya City as a model solar city under the solar city program. Subsequently, seventeen Municipal Corporations, including cities such as Ghaziabad, Agra, Aligarh, Bareilly, Firozabad, Gorakhpur, Jhansi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Meerut, Moradabad, Prayagraj, Saharanpur, Shahjahanpur, Varanasi, and Mathura/Vrindavan, along with Noida City, will also be transformed into solar cities under this program.
The Uttar Pradesh Solar Cities Portal, supported by the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) and Vasudha Foundation, serves as a valuable platform for residents in solar cities. Its primary objective is to enable residents to assess the feasibility of installing grid-connected solar systems on their rooftops.
This user-friendly portal offers various features to assist residents in making informed decisions. It provides information on the maximum subsidy available from both the central and state governments, allowing users to estimate the financial benefits. Additionally, the portal offers insights into the payback period of the investment and the potential monthly savings on electricity bills, empowering users to evaluate the economic viability of solar rooftop systems.
Furthermore, the Uttar Pradesh Solar Cities Portal acts as a convenient channel for users to apply for solar rooftop systems. This initiative aims to encourage the adoption of solar energy and contribute to a sustainable future for Uttar Pradesh.

overview

  • In a solar rooftop system, the solar panels are installed on the roof of any residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial buildings. In a grid-connected rooftop system, the DC power generated from solar panels is converted to AC power using a power conditioning unit/Inverter and is fed to the grid.
  • In Uttar Pradesh, a good amount of solar radiation is received around 300 days which is adequate for electricity generation. There is a volume of vacant roof areas available in the state at residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings which can be used as an income source. Solar rooftop systems act as that source since it gives ultimate savings in electricity bills and provides additional income by selling electricity to DISCOM. To ease the burden of upfront cost for the consumer, central and state governments provide support in the form of subsidies for residential consumers. Additionally, they offer a range of benefits tailored for other segments.

Central Government Subsidy (Central Financial Assistance)

The Central Government comes with a very lucrative subsidy scheme for residential consumers which is only available for grid-connected solar rooftop projects. For other sectors such as government, institutional, social, commercial, industrial, etc. central financial assistance is not available.

Plant Capacity Applicable Subsidy
1kW – 2 kW Rs 30,000 to Rs 60,000/
2kW – 3 kW Rs 60,000 to Rs 78,000/
Above 3 kW Rs 78,000/- fixed

Why invest in solar rooftop?

The solar rooftop system has a direct impact on the monthly electricity bill of each consumer. Through the subsidies granted by the Central and State Governments, the actual cost of the system experiences a substantial reduction for residential consumers. In the case of other consumer categories, where the electricity rates are elevated, the introduction of net billing introduces substantial economic advantages. Detailed monthly estimations and savings for different consumer segments are outlined below.

Parameter Value (Residential Consumers) Value (C&I Consumers)
Capacity 2 kWp 20 kWp
Cost per kWp (Tentative) ₹ 60,000 ₹ 60,000
Cost of system ₹ 1,20,000 ₹ 12,00000
Total Subsidy (Central + State) ₹ 90,000 ₹ 0
Net Cost of the system ₹ 30,000 ₹ 12,00000
Units’ generation / month 270 kWh 2700 kWh
Average unit cost ₹ 6 ₹ 8.5
Savings from Electricity ₹ 1,620 ₹ 22,950
Payback (Tentative) 1.5 years 4.4 years
